The Chaplains are volunteers who are here to serve members, guests and staff as part of the family of the YMCA.
We have a belief in God and in a spiritual dimension to life and are committed to the development of the whole person. Whether or not you regard yourself as religious, we are available and would hope to get to know you.
There is often a chaplain available within the Y Club (who can be identified by the word CHAPLAIN on the back of their t-shirt) and can be contacted via the reception desk. Alternatively, phone the Y Club: (0161) 837 3535, or Rev Simon Gatenby (0161) 273 2470, or Derek Purnell (0161) 688 4789. We can also be contacted by email.
Prayer Requests can be put in the box next to the Chaplaincy Noticeboard or can be sent to us by email in strict confidence.
Honorary Chaplain: Rev Simon Gatenby serves in this role and functions as spiritual advisor to the Board.
The ‘Good News Paper’ is a free newspaper providing ‘good news’ for the members. Pick one up from the Reception counter or by the changing rooms.
Christmas Carol Service: An annual event for Y Club and Junior Y members, guests and staff. Mince pies and mulled wine usually follow. Festive fun for all ages!
Chaplaincy Meetings take place every two months, are organised by Derek, chaired by Simon and minuted by Maureen.
Funerals: Chaplains often attend funerals of members they have known or when requested. Occasionally Simon and Derek have been asked to officiate at funerals or memorial services.
